Neuro Linguistic Programming

In the 1970s Richard Bandler, a student of Psychology, and John Grinder, a Linguist, studied the structure of how particularly successful people think and experience the world. They distilled their findings into a set of simple models that can be used to change thoughts, behaviours and limiting beliefs, quickly and effectively. They called these models Neuro Linguistic Programming.

Neuro
refers to the nervous system which processes our experience through our 5 primary senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell

Linguistic
how we interface and communicate with others through our use of words and body language

Programming
how we tend to form patterns of behaviour from birth and how we can change these behavioural patterns and act with purpose

NLP looks at the relationship between the mind (neuro) and language (linguistic), and how together they effect our body and behaviour (programming).

Through its focus on 'how' instead of 'why', NLP emphasises positive outcomes rather than dwelling on problems.

Some of the areas that NLP can help with are:

  • Setting clear goals
  • Increasing your levels of confidence
  • Managing your state and reducing stress
  • Becoming aware of your values
  • Aligning your actions with your values
  • Understanding the way you think
  • Clearing inner obstacles
  • Communicating effectively
